The Center for Dental Informatics in the Department of Dental Public Health of the School of Dental Medicine is announcing a full-time research position at the level of Postdoctoral Associate. The postdoctoral associate will play a key role in two NIH-funded research projects that aim to improve the management of electronic patient data in dentistry and to facilitate their reuse for research. The first project will develop a consensus-based dental information model that can serve as a blueprint for storing patient data in electronic dental records (EDRs). The second is piloting an innovative method for reusing patient data from commercial private-practice EDRs for clinical and comparative effectiveness research. The associate will be deeply involved in all phases of the projects, with major responsibilities in developing and evaluating data representations; mapping data elements between different EDR and research applications; and conducting telephone surveys, contextual inquiry and field observations. The successful applicant must be a highly motivated, recent PhD degree recipient in biomedical informatics, computer/information science, information technology or related field, with knowledge and skills in information modeling, ontology development, data mapping and extraction as well as experience in various research methods, such as contextual inquiry, surveys and field observations. Strong verbal and written skills in English and ability to work well in a tightly knit research team are essential. Experience in writing and publishing academic articles is expected.
