The Windows XP Professional environment

Logging on and using the mouse

  • log onto Windows XP
  • drag-and-drop with the mouse
  • know what right-clicking on an object does
  • On the Windows XP desktop, drag the Recycle Bin to the diagonally opposite corner of the screen, then drag it back.
  • Find out the processor type and clock speed of your computer by inspecting the Properties of the My Computer icon.

Exploring the Windows XP Professional desktop

  • start the built-in Windows Calculator
  • Move the Taskbar from its position at the bottom of the screen to the right edge of the screen, then move it back.

Working with an open window

  • open, move, resize and close windows
  • Start WordPad and resize and reposition its window so it occupies the lower left quadrant of the screen.
  • Maximize the window, then shrink it back to the previous size using one mouse click. Close the window.

  • set your desktop to the Windows Classic look
  • Invite a friend to help you remotely on your computer.

Managing folders and files

Introduction to Windows XP Professional hierarchy

  • set properties of the Taskbar
  • explore properties of the Start Button
  • Switch off the display of the clock on the Taskbar, then switch it on again.
  • Explore the Start Button and check how many items are in the Favorites folder.

My Documents, My Computer, and My Network Places

  • explain the purpose of the My Documents, My Computer and My Network Places objects
  • change display settings for files and folders
  • Identify all available storage devices on your computer.
  • View a list of all other Windows computers on the University of Pittsburgh network.
  • In the folder C:\Windows\, arrange all files by type, and have them displayed in groups. Then, reverse the view settings back to the original values.

Using the search companion

  • search your computer and network for a variety of objects, such as files, folder and computers
  • search the Internet with a variety of search engines
  • Find the folder Sample Pictures on your C: drive.
  • Locate at least one file that is larger than one MB and was created within the last month.
  • Find the picture titled “winter.jpg”.

Creating folders

  • creating, deleting and renaming folders
  • creating logical folder hierarchies
  • Create the folder C:\TMP. (If it exists already, delete it first.)
  • Within this folder, create two folders: Accounting and Personnel.
  • Rename the folder Personnel to Employees.

Copying and moving objects

  • copy and move folders, files or groups of files
  • select several files within a directory
  • undo the preceding file operation automatically
  • Open the folder C:\TMP, and copy the folder Employees to the A: drive with two mouseclicks.
  • Move the folder Employees into the folder Accounting.
  • Undo this operation with two mouseclicks.
  • Explain the difference between shift-clicking vs. control-clicking a series of objects.

Using the recycle bin

  • delete and recover files
  • explain the difference between deleting items from your hard drive vs. items from a networked drive.
  • Name three methods to delete a folder.
  • Delete the folder C:\TMP\Employees, and then restore it from the Recycle Bin.

Orientation to Windows XP Professional programs

Working with WordPad

  • start a wordprocessing application, type a letter and save the letter to a specific location
  • print documents
  • Start WordPad, and type a brief letter to your neighbor.
  • Save the letter in the folder C:\TMP\Letters under the name of your neighbor.

Working with Paint

  • perform basic operations in a drawing or painting program
  • set an image as the background image of your desktop
  • Using the Windows Paint Program, draw the face of your neighbor, and label the face with his/her name.
  • Open the picture winter.jpg, and write Happy Holidays in font Times Roman, font size 50 on it. DO NOT save the picture.

Managing and administering the workstation

Using the Control Panel

  • configure system options such as screen saver, sound volume, time/date and desktop settings
  • List the steps you would have to complete to change the time on your computer.
  • Set the look of the desktop to the Windows Classic look. The, revert your change again.
  • Adjust your screen saver so it will come on after 15 minutes of inactivity.
