Residency Training Programs
Listed below are the residency programs leading to a certificate of advanced specialty education. The Master of Dental Science degree (MDS) is offered in each of the programs, with the exception of Advanced Education in General Dentistry and Dental Anesthesiology.

Application Information
University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine utilizes the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) and the self-managed application process for applying to the postdoctoral programs. Application deadline dates vary depending on the program into which entry is being sought. Each program application deadline is strictly enforced. Please use above chart to determine which ONE application method to use.

Applications for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics programs must be filed through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS), which can be contacted directly at csrpass@ADEA.org , or phone (202)332-8790. Applications to the AEGD, Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics programs can be made through PASS or the self-managed application process. When filing a PASS application, those applying to the AEGD, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and Pediatric Dentistry programs must also apply through the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program. Applications to the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology program are made through the self-managed application only.

Admission Requirements

  1. Academic credentials will be evaluated by the Office of Residency Education and the Residency Program's Admission Committee.
  2. Successful completion of National Board Dental Examination (Part I and II).
  3. Application Deadline: Completed applications (including the non-refundable application fee, letters of recommendation, and all test scores) must be received in the Office of Residency Education. Please contact the Office of Residency Education for application deadlines.

Application Procedures for Self-Managed Application
Carefully read and follow the instructions so that there will not be a delay in the presentation of your application to the Admissions Committee. The list below states the required application materials and specific instructions for submitting these items follow.

Checklist of Required Application Materials

  1. Complete and Print the School of Dental Medicine Self-Managed Application.
  2. Current Curriculum Vitae and a one-page Personal Statement stating your reasons and objectives for undertaking graduate study.
  3. Three letters of recommendation (the Dean's recommendation and two other recommendations).
  4. A non-refundable application fee of $50 (check made payable to the University of Pittsburgh). THIS FEE IS FOR SELF-MANAGED APPLICATIONS ONLY. DO NOT SEND THIS FEE IF YOU ARE APPLYING THROUGH PASS.
  5. Official score report of the National Board Dental Examinations (Parts I and II). Results are to be submitted directly to the School of Dental Medicine from the National Boards, 211 East Chicago Avenue , Chicago , Illinois 60611-2678.
  6. Original or certified (notarized) copies of all original language academic records, mark sheets, and transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Certified copies of the original certificates or diplomas awarded at the completion of studies must also be submitted. Where official, original documents are issued in a language other than English, certified (notarized) English translations must also be submitted. English translations of documents alone are not acceptable.

If submitting by mail, place the application, curriculum vitae, personal statement, academic records and transcripts, letters of recommendation, and the application fee in one envelope. The letters of recommendation must be in envelopes that are sealed by the individual writing the recommendation and this person's signature must also appear on the back flap of the envelope. Mail to the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine, Office of Residency Education, Attention: Ms. Pamela Edwards, 3501 Terrace Street, 440 Salk Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15261.

All materials, including the National Board and TOEFL Scores, must be received in our office by the application deadline for the respective program.

All application instructions should be followed carefully. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be processed. All materials submitted for consideration become the property of the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine , and will not be returned to the applicant for any reason.

Interviews/Selection of Students
Interviews will be granted after the applicant's credentials have been reviewed. Interviews are by invitation only. Candidates selected for an interview will be notified by the respective programs.

Selection Process Criteria
Due to the diverse needs of the individual programs, each specialty residency program will establish specific criteria for selection of applicants that will meet the needs of their program. The following criteria must be met by all candidates for acceptance:

  • Academic qualifications that exhibit the potential for success
  • National Board Scores which demonstrate a high level of competency
  • Letters of Recommendations
  • An Interview

When are the program application deadlines?
The program deadlines are available on the PASS website.

Can you send me all available application materials?
All applications are only available online. Please see the PASS website or the University's self-managed application.

Can you send me application materials for the Dental Public Health program?
The Dental Public Health program is not currently accepting any dental residents.

What is the current tuition for the residency program?
Tuition varies from year to year and current tuition information is available on the University of Pittsburgh website under Clinical post-graduate programs at the School of Dental Medicine. http://www.ir.pitt.edu/tuition/index.html

Are any tuition breaks given?
There are no tuition benefits for the residency programs from the University of Pittsburgh. The only exception is for current residents of Pennsylvania, who have lived in Pennsylvania for over one year before the program starts.

Is there a stipend paid during each year of residency?
Yes, there is currently a stipend for each year of residency for each program.
