School of Dental Medicine Scholarship Awards
The School of Dental Medicine offers several endowed scholarships for predoctoral (DMD), postdoctoral (advanced education), and dental hygiene students. Each scholarship has its own purpose and eligibility criteria. Scholarships from the School of Dental Medicine are renewable if the recipient meets the requirements outlined as well as academic merit in the scholarship notification. The amount available may vary from year to year.
Predoctoral (DMD) Funds
Dean’s Scholarship (est. 2002)
Two incoming students are selected each year based on their admission application information, academic performance (including grades and DAT scores), extracurricular activities, individual experiences and accomplishments. Recipients are notified prior to the start of the fall term in which the student begins his/her studies. This scholarship is renewable.
Alliance to the Dental Society of Western PA Scholarship (est. 2000)
Endowment established to support student tuition and scholarships for students who have maintained a “B” average; completed their first year of dental school; and demonstrate a financial need. Recipients must be active in the American Student Dental Association.
Herman and Dorothy Behrman Scholarship (est. 1989)
Established by Dr. Stanley Behrman, Class of 1945, Dr. David Behrman, class of 1980, and Dr. Lawrence Behrman, class of 1946 to “provide scholarship funds to first year students based on financial need and academic merit.”
Michael A. Benko DMD Scholarship (est. 1996)
Established by Dr Michael Benko, class of 1969, to provide scholarships for students in the School of Dental Medicine based on financial need and academic merit.
Adolf L. Biel Endowment (est. 1998)
Established by Laura L. Biel in memory of Dr. Adolf L. Biel, the brother of her husband, Dr. Vincent Biel, class of 1940, to “provide scholarships to students enrolled in the School of Dental Medicine based on financial need and academic merit.”
Thomas Alexander Forsyth Scholarship (est. 1929)
Established from the estate of Dr. Forsyth to provide scholarships based on financial need and academic merit. The scholarship is renewable.
Ruth Semenow Friedman Scholarship (est. 1995)
Established by Dr. Ruth Friedman, class of 1945, and her husband, Mr. William Friedman, to provide a scholarship to a student who has completed the second year of studies in the School of Dental Medicine’s first professional degree program and is based on financial need and academic merit.
Dr. Minnie F. Glickman-Soibelman Scholarship (est. 1980)
Established by Dr. Minnie F. Glickman-Soibelman, class of 1924, to provide scholarship funds for the benefit of a dental student based on financial need and academic merit.
R. Donald Hoffman, DMD, PhD Scholarship (est. 1993)
Established by Dr. R. Donald Hoffman, class of 1972, to provide scholarships to assist students making satisfactory progress towards a DMD degree. Priority is given to students whose 1) home residence is in Bedford Borough, PA; 2) graduates of the Bedford Area School District; or 3) whose home residence is in Bedford County, PA.
Dr. Frank E. Jeffreys Scholarship Fund (est. 2005)
Established by Dr. Jeffreys, class of 1933, to provide scholarships to students who demonstrate financial need based on financial need and academic merit.
Laurence L. Lathrop Endowed Scholarship (est. 1991)
Established by Dr. Laurence L. Lathrop, class of 1945, and his sister, Eleanor L. Lathrop in memory of their father to provide a scholarship to a student in the School of Dental Medicine based on academic merit and financial need.
Lawrence S. Lipkind, Dental Student Endowment (est. 2009)
The purpose of this endowment from Dr. Lipkind, class of 1961, is to support an academic merit and financial based award for a dental student.
Dr. & Mrs. Hubert E. Martin Scholarship (est. 2009)
Created by a gift from Dr. Hubert E. Martin, class of 1945 and his wife to “support an award for a second year student, based on academic merit and financial need.” Preference will be given to dental students from West Virginia, followed by dental students from Pennsylvania.
Oren H. and Sarah K. Moore Scholarship Fund (est. 1993)
The Dr. Moore Scholarship fund was established by. Kevin S. Moore in memory of his father, Dr. Oren H. Moore, class of 1938, and his mother, Sarah K. Moore, based on financial need and academic merit. The scholarship provides funds to a first year student from Western Pennsylvania. This scholarship is renewable.
Clarence M. Morgan Scholarship (est. 1984)
Established from the Estate of Clarence M. Morgan to provide financial assistance to dental students based on financial need and academic merit.
Albert R. Pechan Scholarship (est. 1970)
Dr. Albert R. Pechan, class of 1928 and a former member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1949-1969), established this scholarship “to be used as a scholarship for dental students qualifying under the standards as set forth by the faculty of the dental school in cooperation with the Odontological Society of Western Pennsylvania (now Dental Society of Western Pennsylvania).” Preference is given to students active in the American Student Dental Association.
Nu Chapter, House Association of Psi Omega Fraternity (est. 2009)
Created by Nu Chapter, Psi Omega, to provide funding for dental students from Western Pennsylvania in good academic standing and is renewable. Individuals who are legacies of a Psi Omega member, or recommended by a Psi Omega member, are eligible.
Robert W. Roden Award (est. 1986)
Created by Dr. Roden, class of 1926, to provide a scholarship for an “outstanding student in Prosthodontics entering the final year based on financial need and academic merit.”
Dr. Norman Stern Scholarship (est. 1990)
Established by Dr. Norman Stern, class of 1970, to provide an annual scholarship to a DMD student who has maintained a 3.00 GPA; and shows financial need.
Zubrow Memorial Scholarship (est. 1983)
Established in the memory of Abe and Yetta Zubrow to provide an assistance grant for a student in any of the four classes based on academic merit and financial need. A minimum of $1,000 is awarded annually.
Robert Zugsmith Memorial Fund (est. 1955)
Established by Dr. Robert Zugsmith to provide a scholarship to a “worthy and meritorious student or students of the School of Dentistry based on financial need and academic merit.”
Advanced Education Program Funds
W. Harry Archer Oral Surgery Scholarship (est. 2008)
Established by the Louise E. Archer Trust and their son, Dr. William Archer, in memory of Dr. W. Harry Archer, class of 1927. This fund provides partial scholarship support to residents enrolled in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program.
Dr. Adolf L. Biel Scholarship (est. 1998)
This endowment was established in memory of Dr. Adolf L. Biel by his brother, Dr. Vincent Biel, class of 1940, and Laura Biel, to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the SDM with a preference to students studying oral surgery.
Dr. & Mrs. W. Arthur George Educational Fund (est. 1980)
The W. Arthur George, class of 1932, fund supports research and travel for educational purposes to full-time students enrolled in a graduate program in the SDM.
Dr. Willard Flint Student Resource Fund (est. 1999)
Established by alumni and friends in honor of Dr. Flint, class of 1953, upon his retirement after 33 years of service to the School. The fund provides support for books, fees, travel and educational expenses for one orthodontic resident each year.
Dental Hygiene Funds
Dental Hygiene Endowed Scholarship Fund (est. 2008)
The Dental Hygiene endowment established by Ms. Barb Egnot, DH 1975, provides partial scholarship support to dental hygiene students; and is administered by the School’s Dental Hygiene Program.
Elizabeth A. Pechan Scholarship (est. 1970)
Established by Dr. Albert Pechan, dental class of 1928 and a former member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1949-1969), in honor of his wife, to provide scholarships for dental hygiene students.
Sandy Mucahy Edgar Scholarship Fund (est. 1995)
Created by the dental class of 1981 in memory of Dr. Mucahy-Edgar, DH 1977, DMD 1981, to provide a scholarship to an entering dental hygiene student.
