Robert J. Weyant, DMD, MPH, DrPH, Receives 2026 Pennsylvania Dental Association Public Service Award

Robert Weyant

Dr. Robert Weyant’s commitment to public service has been the cornerstone of his career. He is a Pitt Dental Medicine professor, long-serving chair of the Department of Dental Public Health, and Associate Dean for Dental Public Health and Outreach. More than four decades of his career has been dedicated to advancing oral health through public service, research, education, and policy leadership. Due to his leadership, the Pitt School of Dental Medicine significantly expanded its public health and community engagement mission. He played a pivotal role in transforming the School’s outreach infrastructure, ensuring that preventive and clinical services reach thousands of vulnerable individuals each year. His leadership in the Allegheny County Dental Sealant Initiative, which earned regional recognition for its success, provided essential preventive care to children in low-income districts and helped establish school-based prevention as a local public health priority.

“I’m deeply honored to receive the 2026 Pennsylvania Dental Association Public Service Award, and I’m sincerely grateful to Dean Marnie Oakley for the nomination and to the Annual Awards Committee for this recognition. To be acknowledged by my professional community and to receive this award during the upcoming Member’s Celebration and Awards Dinner is truly meaningful to me. I’m thankful for the colleagues and community partners whose collaboration and support have made my public service work possible.”

Dr. Weyant also has been an outspoken advocate for integrating public health principles into dental education. He founded programs that educate a new generation of clinicians who exhibit strength in population health, epidemiology, evidence-based practice, and skills to address systemic disparities.

Dr. Weyant has been recognized by many professional and public health organizations. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a distinction reserved for those who exemplify the highest standards of ethics, leadership, and professional responsibility. He has received multiple United Way Community Volunteer Awards for his continuous partnerships with community organizations, public health departments, and school systems to extend access to dental screening, prevention, and education programs for underserved families throughout Western Pennsylvania.

He has served on advisory panels for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

His research spans more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, 1 book, 13 book chapters, 8
national organization reports, and numerous conference abstracts, and has significantly advanced the understanding of oral disease, prevention strategies, health disparities, and the connections between oral health and systemic health. His work is widely cited, internationally recognized, and frequently translated into policy and practice.

His distinguished record of service, award-winning scholarship, and leadership in community engagement, make him an individual whose career reflects the highest ideals of our profession and he is strongly deserving of the PDA Public Service Award.

It is with great pride that we congratulate Dr. Weyant on this honor.
