James Guggenheimer BS DDS


Dr. Guggenheimer is Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences in the disciplines of Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology.

He obtained his D.D.S. degree from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.  Subsequently he received a Fellowship in Oral Medicine at the Philadelphia General Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.  He then joined the faculty at the School of Dental Medicine.

His teaching includes clinical supervision of students in the emergency clinic, lectures in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology, and facilitator in the standardized patient program.  Dr. Guggenheimer’s current research is focused on the health and socioeconomic characteristics of School of Dental Medicine patients based on data collected from their electronic health records.  This project is now focused on the utilization of hospital emergency services by patients with dental conditions and is a component of his mentoring of a 2014 Dean’s Summer Research Scholarship Program recipient.

Dr. Guggenheimer is certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine.  He was a recent recipient of the School of Dental Medicine’s Award of Appreciation.
