Since its founding in 1896, the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine has become an international premier dental educational and clinical facility. The school continues in its mission of bringing superior dental education and training, high-quality clinical services, and cutting-edge research into our community and influencing the world.

A primary goal of the School is to offer superior learning opportunities to First Professional, Residency, and Dental Hygiene students, allowing School of Dental Medicine graduates to become nationally and internationally recognized leaders in the profession of dental medicine.

In addition to outstanding classroom opportunities, the School of Dental Medicine is dedicated to research and advancing the science of dentistry.  Research efforts within the school continue to expand, with areas of focus in genetics, craniofacial anomalies, caries, periodontal disease, pharmacology and pain control, implantology, oral cancer and dentistry for immunosuppressed patients.

An integral component of the University’s acclaimed Health Sciences Schools, the School of Dental Medicine acts as a regional provider for many underserved populations, including the treatment of people with special needs. The newly renovated Center for Patients with Special Needs has increased our capacity to treat people with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, Parkinson’s, and other mental or physical impairments. It is often challenging to find a dentist who is able to provide the appropriate level of care for patients with disabilities, and the School of Dental Medicine is proud to provide this service to our community.

Contributions from alumni and friends have been generous and have become vital to address many needs including improvements in our clinical facilities, classrooms, public areas, and students' lives. The cost of a dental education is staggering and a limiting factor to entry into the profession. Debts in excess of $200,000 upon graduation are common. Scholarships and awards are essential to our students, the school and our region.

Your support to the School of Dental Medicine has made many accomplishments possible, such as:

  • Providing student support with need and merit based financial assistance
  • Providing continuing education programs for dental professionals
  • Attracting and retain the finest faculty and researchers
  • Providing quality and affordable oral health care for the community

To accomplish these goals your participation is crucial.  By directing your gift to an area or department that is most meaningful to you, you contribute to the advancement of our work and enable the school to attract the best and brightest students to the region and keep our mission of caring and compassion in our community alive.  We have many ways for you to support the school.
