Dental Anesthesia Care Rooted in Experience and Research

At UDHS, dental anesthesia care is provided by Dr. Mark Saxen and Dr. Michael Cuddy, full-time faculty members at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine who practice, teach, and conduct research. Our anesthesiologists work alongside other UDHS practitioners to care for patients who are unable to undergo conventional dental treatment, tailoring anesthesia — from mild intravenous sedation to full general anesthesia — to each patient's needs.

Dental Anesthesiology Services We Provide:

  • Mild to moderate intravenous sedation
  • Deep sedation
  • General anesthesia for surgical and complex dental procedures
  • Anesthesia care coordinated with other UDHS specialists for patients unable to tolerate conventional dental treatment

Why Choose UDHS for Dental Anesthesiology?

  • Experience: Drs. Saxen and Cuddy bring a combined total of over 50 years of private practice experience to UDHS.
  • Board certification: Both are board-certified by the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology.
  • Efficiency: By performing cases within the School of Dental Medicine, appropriate patients can bypass the additional hurdles needed to have their procedures performed in an outside hospital or surgery center.

Whether you need mild sedation for a routine procedure or general anesthesia for a complex case, our Dental Anesthesiology team is here to help you receive safe, comfortable care.
