Dental Hygiene Practice

The Pitt Dental Medicine Dental Hygiene Practice provides children and adults in our community with routine preventive care such as a dental cleaning, radiographs, and a dental exam.

Pitt dental and dental hygiene students collaborate during your routine check-up appointments to provide excellent comprehensive care, and all patient treatment is supervised by Pitt faculty members. If you need treatment beyond the routine check-up, you will be assigned to a DMD student in our comprehensive care General Dentistry Practice. If more extensive or complicated treatment is necessary, you may be referred to one of the Pitt Dental Medicine Specialty Practices, where dental residents training in a particular aspect of dentistry under the supervision of an advanced-trained faculty member provide high-level dental treatment.

What to Expect at the Initial Screening Appointment

New patients over the age of 18 will be scheduled for a free screening appointment. The purpose of this visit is to familiarize you with how the School operates, assess your overall treatment considerations, and determine if Pitt Dental Medicine is a good fit for your oral health needs.

Routine Recall Appointments

During your recall appointment, the dental hygiene student will review your medical history, identify health and dental concerns, and take your vital signs prior to your examination and cleaning. Pitt Dental Medicine is a teaching dental practice where the care provided is very thorough and appointments are scheduled for 3 hours. Both morning and afternoon appointments are available and typically are scheduled either at 9am or 1pm. Depending upon your oral health needs, sometimes more than one visit may be necessary to complete your treatment.
