FUNCTION:
This professional level position serves as the clinical director for the Dental Center. The General Dentist is responsible for diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries and malformations of teeth and gums and related oral structures. The general dentist may also treat diseases of the nerve, pulp, or other dental tissues affecting vitality of teeth. The dentist provides daily direction and supervision of all clinical staff, ensures the highest standards of dental/medical care is provided to patients. The incumbent ensures the safety and professional operation of the dental center and, in cooperation with the business manager and headquarter, ensures all necessary OSHA and HIPAA training is current. This includes ensuring ongoing compliance with all relevant laws.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION/PATIENT MANAGEMENT:
• Utilizes all appropriate PPE to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
• Examines teeth, gums and related tissues using dental instruments, x-rays, and other diagnostic tools to evaluate dental health, and diagnose diseases or abnormalities.
• Develops and schedules treatment plans for restorative care and ongoing oral health maintenance.
• Administers anesthetics to limit pain and utilizes accepted techniques in patient management to minimize anxiety or fear.
• Uses air turbine and hand instruments, dental appliances, and surgical implements to effect treatments.
• Treats exposure of pulp, by pulp capping, removal of pulp from pulp chamber, or root canal using proper dental instruments. Fills pulp chamber and canal with endodontic materials (anterior teeth). Refers patients with advanced endodontic needs (molars) to other medical professionals for follow up care.
• Designs, creates, and fits prosthodontic appliances such as space maintainers, dentures, crowns or writes fabrication instructions or prescriptions for denturists and dental technicians.
• Performs minor oral and periodontal surgery on the jaw or mouth.
• Provide leadership and direction to the dental office staff regarding accepted dental policies, state and insurance mandates and regulations.
• Participates in periodic (monthly) dental center leadership team meetings, offering advice for continuous improvement of all operations.
• Ensures each employee’s credentials for employment are maintained with regards to continuing education for the entire dental staff, including the scheduling of any mandatory classes, coordinating with divisional headquarters and office management.
• Complete staff annual performance reviews, as directed by headquarters.
• Ensures compliance with all facilities, local, state, and national dental office equipment requirements.
• Maintain all licensure requirements to practice dentistry in PA.
• Regularly reviews operations of the practice for operational cost reduction, efficiency improvement and improved quality of service delivery. This may include modifying procedures or policies, in consultation with headquarters regarding operational changes.
• Coordinate schedules with the dentist at the Johnstown office and headquarters to provide mutual support to the practice operations and to patients.
• Review and manage choice of, use, and expenses related to office and clinical supplies for cost effectiveness as well as to ensure appropriateness of purchases (best supplies and materials for applications, etc.).
• Review reimbursement levels to ensure the proper reimbursement for our procedures.

Community Service and Communication:
• Participates in community events such as health fairs, educational seminars, Dental Task Force meetings or other events to support oral health education for rural, underserved or otherwise disadvantaged members of the community.
• Assists in the development of educational materials to advise community members and instruct patients about preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems and oral health care services.
• Considers the relative costs and benefits for all patient care decisions and plans appropriate courses or treatment within the parameters and scope of the clinic.
• Review daily charges and dental procedures, to ensure that all procedures have been properly charged and billed to the appropriate insurance company or patient record.
• Provides personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support or other personal care to patients, coworkers, Salvation Army officers and staff and the administrative director as appropriate.
• Represents the clinic at trade shows, local, state, or national conferences, and actively participates in local dental society, Pennsylvania Dental Association and American Dental Association.
• Maintain contact and relationships with the various Dental Insurance Companies regarding our participation with these organizations.
• Utilize the resources of the ADA and PDA to help our dental centers continue to improve, grow, and provide excellent dental treatment. Attend meetings when required as a member of the ADA/PDA.
• Help identify alternate funding sources, such as grants or awards from various sources. Provide required dental statistics and terminology to enhance our ability to qualify and receive these grants and awards. Meet with various groups or organizations as needed to provide a clear understanding of our needs.
• Attend the Monthly Venango County Dental Association meetings in Oil City (when possible), to continue our commitment to providing dental services in the Venango County area.
• Actively participate in the planning and execution of the yearly Give Kids a Smile event.
• Maintain relationship with the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine for the utilization of fourth year dental students at our facilities as an adjunct to our patient care, providing the students with valuable dentistry experience.
• Maintain the relationship of dental office to the Salvation Army Corp and officer(s) in support of bridging patients within the dental center to programs and services offered by the corps.
• Be available for any meetings, events, or other organized gatherings, as directed by headquarters.
• Report to headquarters whenever information is required or requested.
• All other duties, as directed by headquarters.

Environment:
• Dentists are frequently exposed to infectious oral conditions, hazardous chemicals/waste, and are required to adhere to OSHA, DOH and other infection control standards including the use or PPE (gloves, eye protection, face shield) for every patient.
• Dentists are required to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B, and to have a current PPD test with negative results for Tuberculosis every 2 years.
• Clinical staff is provided with information related to SDS sheets for all materials used in the practice and receive OSHA training on blood borne pathogens/PPE use within 90 days of initial employment and yearly thereafter.

Required Experience

EDUCATION & REQUIREMENTS:
• Graduation from an accredited school of dental medicine, successful completion of all board examinations, and a current license to practice dentistry in Pennsylvania are required.
• A DEA certificate for prescribing or dispensing all levels of medication including schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4 and 5 level narcotics and a Nitrous Oxide Certification is also required.
• The dentist must supply evidence of current malpractice insurance with liability limits of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $3,000,000 in aggregate. This must be maintained by the dentist and is a condition of employment.
 All required PA Clearances must be reviewed and approved by HR prior to employment and renewed as necessary:
o PA Child Abuse History Clearance
o PA Criminal Background Check
o Federal Fingerprint criminal history check
 PA Mandated and Permissive Reporting
 The Salvation Army's KeepSAfe training is also required within 30 days of employment.
