Fees and Insurance

Pitt Dental Medicine offers a number of convenient options to pay for your new dental treatment. We work with many insurance providers and in most cases we will submit your dental insurance claims to your insurance company. We recommend that you contact your insurance company for clarification of your benefits and learn about any non-covered service, copayments and deductibles that are your responsibility. Failure to pay your balance at Pitt Dental Medicine may result in discontinuation of your treatment and will result in further collection activity.

We are happy to talk about your account – call to talk with one of our staff members at 412-648-3100. Ask about our income-based discounts on selected services.

Pitt students, faculty, and staff receive 10% off all non-covered services.

Medical Assistance

Provided through government agencies, Medical Assistance pays for dental care for individuals who meet state and federal income and other guidelines. If you are eligible for benefits from Medical Assistance, coverage is limited to specific, predetermined services. Services that are included in your treatment that are not covered through Medical Assistance, and any applicable co-payments, are your responsibility. Some services may require pre-authorization from Medical Assistance. If your accepted dental treatment plan includes pre-authorization services, we are not able to provide the service to you until pre-authorization has been completed. If you decide to receive treatment for services that are not covered, one of our Patient Experience Specialists will assist you with financing options.

Please note that Medical Assistance will not cover x-rays, prophylaxis (cleaning), or an examination if you recently have received these services from another dental provider. Because of this limitation, you will be required to pay for these services if you have them performed and your claim is denied.

Commercial Insurance, including Federal Employee Programs

In most cases, Pitt Dental Medicine will bill your dental insurance provider for any services you receive.  We are participating with a number of commercial dental insurance carriers including United Concordia, UPMC Dental Advantage, Delta, Dominion and Aetna.  You are responsible for services that are denied or are not covered, applicable co-payments, and any deductible that your plan includes.

Dental Maintenance Organizations (DMO)

If you have chosen Pitt Dental Medicine as your Primary Dental Office (PDO) or we receive a referral from your PDO, we can bill your Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) for the services you receive. We are participating with Concordia Plus, Dominion DMO and Aetna DMO.  You will be responsible for any service copayments, office visit copayments, and any services that are denied or not covered as determined by your specific DMO plan.

Worker’s Compensation

Some dental care may be covered by worker’s compensation. An authorization must be obtained from your worker’s compensation carrier prior to scheduling an appointment at the School of Dental Medicine. We will submit claims for treatment related to your worker’s compensation injury; however, any treatment not covered by your worker’s compensation carrier or your dental insurance carrier will be your responsibility.

Automobile Insurance

If your dental treatment is related to an automobile accident your automobile insurance may cover your related treatment. An accident claim must be filed with the automobile insurance carrier prior to scheduling an appointment at Pitt Dental Medicine. We will submit claims for treatment related to your automobile accident injury, however, any treatment not covered by your accident claim or your dental insurance carrier will be your responsibility.
