Samer Zaky DMD PhD

Assistant Professor

Samer Zaky, DMD, PhD, is a research assistant professor at the Center for Craniofacial Regeneration (CCR) and the Department of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. He earned his Bachelor of Dental Medicine and Surgery in 2000 from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, where he was first introduced to the then-emerging field of Tissue Engineering. Supported by a Marie Curie Fellowship (FP6) from the European Union, he completed his PhD in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in 2009 at the University of Genoa, Italy. He subsequently pursued postdoctoral research in tooth regeneration at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2015, Dr. Zaky earned his DMD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, integrating clinical training with his ongoing research in regenerative dentistry.
As a general dental practitioner, an educator, and a researcher focused on tooth regeneration for more than two decades, Dr. Zaky grew in awe about the tiny but extraordinary tooth organ that is developmentally a marvel, functionally unparalleled and aesthetically beautiful.
Believing that a healthy dental pulp is indispensable for tooth endurance and lifelong function, Dr. Zaky's current research aims to develop objective diagnostic measures for the dental pulp inflammation, addressing the limitations of the existing subjective methods and reducing unnecessary tooth devitalization.
