Dr. Kevin Pursel earned his DMD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine after completing his undergraduate studies at Penn State University. He completed a two-year General Practice residency at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore serving as the Chief Resident in the second year. After completing residency, he owned and operated a technology focused private practice for 22 years in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. After affiliating his practice with an emerging Dental Service Organization, he practiced an additional 5 years as a lead associate dentist and as a Regional Dental Director. During that time, he earned an MBA degree from Saint Francis University.
Throughout his career, he has held many formal and informal leadership positions and served on many committees, including the Pennsylvania Dental Association Council on Government Relations. He is a dedicated lifelong learner and has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education encompassing many clinical and nonclinical disciplines. He has belonged to the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and held an Associate Fellowship in the World Clinical Laser Institute.
After his return to Pittsburgh and before starting full time at Pitt Dental Medicine, he worked as a consultant and trainer in the private sector and as an associate dentist for a mobile dental company delivering care to under served patients that reside in facilities, are home bound, or are receiving care at a rural health center. Currently he is as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Comprehensive Care teaching in the clinical modules, the preclinical laboratory, and is a course Director/co-Director for multiple courses.
