When should I apply?
As early as possible. Although applications are accepted until October 31st, we strongly suggest applying prior to September.
What documents do I need to send?
All documents should be submitted directly to AADSAS with the exception of the University application fee.
Where can I pay my non-refundable supplemental application fee?
Pay your non-refundable $75 supplemental application fee
How are applications processed?
Applications are processed by the Pitt Dental Medicine Office of Student Affairs and are then presented to the Admissions Committee. This committee comprises faculty, alumni and upper-level student representatives. Careful review of applications is ongoing as applicant files are received. Consideration is given only to candidates who have submitted a completed AADSAS application and University application fee.
How can I improve my application for next cycle if I reapply?
The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine receives numerous applications during the application cycle. An applicant who has not received an offer of admission is welcome to reapply during any subsequent application cycle.
To improve your application, please consider the following:
- Submit your application early.
- Enroll in a Post-baccalaureate program for two-terms of full time study to improve your undergraduate GPA.
- Obtain a master's degree in the sciences to showcase academic success in graduate school.
- Gain more experience by volunteering and shadowing within the dental profession.
- Retake the DAT after sufficient preparation or a prep course.
Applicants must reapply through AADSAS and must include all updated documentation, letters of recommendation and application fees.
What are the residency requirements for the School of Dental Medicine?
There are no residency requirements for either application or admission to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Applicants should be aware that federal Stafford Loans are available only to U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.
How many spots are available in the class?
Each DMD program class comprises 80 students.
How can I schedule a tour of Pitt Dental Medicine?
We offer In-person and Virtual Information sessions that begin in the spring and end in mid July. Attendees of the in-person information sessions will receive a tour of the school. Please visit Information sessions to view upcoming dates and to RSVP.
In fairness to all applicants, no personal meetings or one-on-one tours will be given during the application cycle. Invitations to specific events will be offered only to interviewed students in the Fall term.
Is there a personal interview?
A personal interview is a requirement for admission. The admissions committee will send selected applicants an interview invitation, however, an interview invitation does not guarantee acceptance. Interviews occur on selected Mondays.
Are there research opportunities for students?
Yes. We have many opportunities for student research, including the Dean's Summer Research Program, which provides a three-month summer research experience for incoming first year dental students each year.
Does the school have a Simulation Clinic?
The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine introduces predoctoral students to the practice of dentistry in a simulated learning environment. The simulation clinic provides 80 student workstations that are fully equipped with closed circuit video monitors, dental units, operatory lights, computers and simulated patients. This modern facility provides an ideal interactive environment for instructors and students.
Does the school have a Digital Dentistry Lab?
Patients at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine can now benefit from the most current advances in dental care, thanks to three new Digital Dentistry labs designed to train students and residents on leading-edge dental technology.
