Residency Program Application Instructions

We offer general guidelines for the residency application process, but there may be variations within each program. Please refer to the program of interest for specific application procedures.

Application Types

Applicants to Pitt Dental Medicine's Advanced Dental Education and Residency Programs may use the ADEA Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS), Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program (MATCH) application or the self-managed application process, if applicable. Please refer to the program of interest in the table below for specific application type and submission deadline.

Application Deadlines

Application deadline dates vary by program and application deadlines are strictly enforced. Please review specific application information for the program in which you are interested. Application deadlines are also listed in ADEA PASS. Table of application & deadline. Each entry will be linked as applicable to the program page or the application itself.

Application Procedures for ADEA PASS and the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program

Pitt Dental Medicine wants to make the application process as smooth and straight forward as possible. You will find below information about the ADEA PASS and Match application processes that are used by the majority of our residency programs. Pitt Dental Medicine utilizes these services to enable applicants to apply to specific programs in a focused manor.

Pitt Dental Medicine Self-Managed Application 

Pitt Dental Medicine provides a self-managed application process for candidates who feel that a singular, written application is their preferred method of applying to our programs that utilize a rolling admission process.

Interview & Selection of Students

Interviews are by invitation only and will be granted after the applicant's credentials have been reviewed by each program’s Admissions Committee. Candidates selected for an interview will be notified by a representative from the respective program.

Selection Process Criteria

Due to the diverse needs of the individual programs, each dental specialty residency program has established specific criteria for the selection of applicants. 

The following acceptance criteria must be met by candidates for all programs:

  • Academic qualifications that exhibit the potential for success;
  • National Board Scores which demonstrate a high level of competency;
  • Letters of recommendations; and
  • An interview

Entrance Requirements

All successful applicants must possess a DMD or DDS degree to matriculate into an Advanced Dental Education and Residency Program.  Applicants with degrees from dental schools outside of the United States or Canada must meet educational requirements established and evaluated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to matriculation.

All application instructions should be followed carefully. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be processed. All materials submitted for consideration become the property of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and will not be returned to the applicant for any reason.
